Heuliez is a French automobile manufacturer based in Rortay in the Deux-Sèvres department. Despite its very long history, the manufacturer is still known for maintaining 100% French production, carried out by workers rather than robots.
The company has been producing car bodies since 1920, but since 1937 it has focused on the Heuliez bus division, which specializes in body repairs. In the early 1990s, the company was integrated into the CNH industrial group, which also includes the bus manufacturer Iveco.
In 1984, Heuliez launched the GX107. It was the first passenger bus to be produced under the GX brand. In 1986, Heuliez launched the world’s first two-seater articulated bus, the GX237. It was produced in a limited edition of just 10 units under the name Renault Megabus. However, the GX series as we know it today was not until 1994 with the GX317, the very first flat-bottomed bus accessible to people with reduced mobility.
With the introduction of the GX117 in 1998, Heuliez offered for the first time a complete range of city buses, including a midi bus, a standard bus and an articulated bus.
As Heuliez is a bus manufacturer, the French manufacturer has based its buses on the technical base of famous manufacturers such as Mercedes (1975-1984), Renault (1994-2001), Volvo (1995-2001) and, since 2001, Iveco vehicles.
