This content pack adds the Byzantine Emperor Basil II and the Gaulish leader Ambiorix to the game. The Byzantine Empire relies on religious and military might to subjugate its enemies, particularly with the Dromon and Tagma unique units. The Gauls, on the other hand, are flexible in combat and benefit from the Oppida unique district, a major pillar of culture and production.
Requires Civilization VI to play. The Civilization VI expansion pack is required for some features in the New Frontier Pass.
Includes the Byzantine Empire led by Basil II, the Dromon and Tagma unique units, and the Hippodrome unique district.
• Civ Unique Trait: The Taxis ability grants additional Combat Strength or Religious Strength to units for each Holy City converted to the Byzantine religion. Byzantine religion is spread by defeating enemy units. Cities with Holy Sites gain additional Great Prophet points.
• Unique Leader Ability: The Porphyrogenitus ability allows heavy and light cavalry to deal full damage to cities that share the same religion as Byzantium. Upon unlocking the Divine Right civic, Basil gains a unique unit, the Tagma.
• Unique Units: The Byzantine Empire has access to two unique units.
• The Dromon replaces the Quadrireme, has increased range, and gains additional combat strength in battle.
• Tagma replaces Knights and grants nearby land units additional combat or religious strength.
• Unique District: Hippodrome replaces Entertainment Complex. It is cheaper and provides additional Amenity. When built, Hippodrome and related buildings grant Byzantium a heavy cavalry unit.
Also includes the Gallic civilization led by Ambiorix. The Gauls have access to the unique unit Gaesatae and a unique district, Oppid.
• Unique Civilization Trait: Hallstatt Culture grants Mines a minor adjacency bonus to any district, allows cultural capture of unowned tiles, and grants additional culture. Specialized districts cannot be built next to city centers. They do not receive adjacency bonuses from other districts.
• Unique Leader Ability: The Eburones King ability allows Ambiorix to gain culture based on unit cost when training non-civilian units. Melee, anti-cavalry, and ranged units gain bonus combat strength for being adjacent to military units.
• Unique Unit: Hesatae replace Warriors. Hesatae are more expensive to train, but gain bonus combat strength when facing stronger units and district defenses.
• Unique District: Oppidum – An alternative to the Industrial Zone that costs less and is unlocked earlier. Unlocks the Apprenticeship technology when built. The Oppid is protected, can shoot back at attackers, and gets a large bonus for being adjacent to quarries and strategic resources.
New Tragic Ages game mode (requires the Civilization VI expansion pack to play)
• Additional game mode with special rules:
• New Standards: Each era will see nations enter either a Golden Age or a Dark Age. Each will have a much more significant impact on gameplay.
• New Policies: Players will have access to special Social Institutions that replace Aspirations. These include new, more flexible and powerful Dark and Golden Age Policies.
• New Golden Age Bonuses: Entering a Golden Age with excess Era Points will result in increased Loyalty influence on nearby civilizations.
• New Dark Age Challenges: The turmoil of the Dark Ages can cause cities to revolt!
• New Era Points: Era points are gained by researching technologies or civics, and by promoting units through combat. Historical Moments also award Era Points.
New Wonders of the World
• Biosphere: Increases the prestige of swamp and rainforest tiles. In the Gathering Storm expansion, increases energy gain and tourist arrivals. In other rulesets, grants a bonus to science for each swamp, rainforest, or regular forest in a city that has this wonder
• Statue of Zeus: Provides the city that owns it with military units and speeds up the training of anti-cavalry units.

• The Highlands map is a large, mostly hilly and mountainous area.
