Strike your enemies with bow and spear as you lead your mighty chariots to glorious victory. Swifter than Eagles takes Field of Glory II back in time to the dawn of “civilized” warfare, spanning the period from 2500 to 681 BC.
The first civilizations in the Middle East arose during the Early Bronze Age, from 3500 to 2000 BC, in what is known as the Fertile Crescent, a vast semicircular region of agricultural land stretching from Egypt to Mesopotamia. The most important of these were the many Sumerian city-states and the Old Kingdom of Egypt, ruled by kings who worshiped living gods.
The Middle Bronze Age, 2000-1600 BC, was the birthplace of the ancient Egyptians. BC, was marked by a massive migration of peoples into the Middle East, resulting in the emergence of new states such as Mitanni, Hittites, Babylon and Assyria. Northern Egypt was overrun by the Hyksos, who ruled as the 15th Dynasty. During this period, chariots were developed as a truly effective weapon on the battlefield.
Around 1550 BC, the Hyksos were expelled from Egypt, and the New Kingdom period began. Under the pharaohs of the New Kingdom, Egypt began to pursue a more aggressive foreign policy and created a foreign empire in Canaan and Syria. This put them in direct competition with the other great international powers of the Late Bronze Age, 1600-1200 BC, first the Mitanni, then the Hittites.
Most of these great civilizations experienced a serious crisis at the end of the 13th century BC; The Mycenaean and Hittite palace cultures collapsed, the Kassite Babylonian dynasty fell, the Egyptians abandoned their Asian empire, and Ugarit and other Amorite city-states were destroyed. The causes of this crisis are not fully understood, but they probably involved drought and famine. Another possible factor was the migration of aggressive tribes into the region, including the enigmatic Sea Peoples.
After the civilizations recovered from the collapse of the Late Bronze Age, the Near East came to be dominated by the Neo-Assyrian Empire, which suppressed any opposition with particular brutality and eventually ruled over much of the Fertile Crescent by the 7th century BCE. Egypt, meanwhile, went through a long period of decline, during which it was conquered by a succession of foreign powers.
