The galaxy is expanding! The second expansion, Distant Worlds 2, introduces two new playable factions – the insular Quameno and the countless and ruthless Gisureans!
The Quameno prefer to be left alone to focus on their explorations, and their society is often organized as a wartime economy, but with an emphasis on exploration rather than military matters. They value puzzle solving and the discovery of new knowledge almost above all else, certainly more than distractions such as diplomacy, war, or espionage. They also have a natural aptitude for energy technology, and due to the abundance of energy in their ships, stations, and cities, they use energy fields where many others might use solid materials.
Their governments are typically based on geniocracy, using unique objects such as the Labyrinth of Riddles to determine who is most worthy of leadership, and the Center of Transcendence, a miracle that causes a singularity of sorts that frees them from their physical limitations and allows them to continue their research for eternity.
The Gisureans are a legion with incredible reproduction rates, as well as a ruthless drive to extract and consume enough resources to keep their growing population happy enough to not succumb to tribal strife. They also have a mysterious past, as the hive mind they once had has been destroyed, leaving only a more limited shared consciousness. They construct their ships using partially organic processes, allowing them to be more durable, but they are really focused on their numbers. The Gisurians tend to focus on numbers and tactics based on numbers in space combat, specializing in many small ships and large numbers of Hive Starfighters for their ships, stations, and colony defenses, having the earliest access to planetary starfighter bases of any faction.
Each of these new factions also has its own distinct storyline and unique story locations, adding to the possible events of exploration and your knowledge of galactic history. The Quameno faction will give you additional insight into the Ancient Galaxy and some of the secrets left behind by the Ancient Guardians, while the Gisurians’ history is tied to the Hive threat, as well as an ancient enemy known as the Shakturi!
